Even though we all know salads can be a healthy alternative to our food selections we tend to choose toppings for our salad that defeat the entire purpose of having a healthy light salad. Instead we might as well have eaten a cheeseburger and fries.
I know you probably don’t do that, but do you put any of these 3 things on your salad and tell yourself you are eating a healthy salad? I bet you do.
While cheese does provide some protein it also provides a lot of extra calories that we don’t really need. We also tend to put more cheese than needed to add flavor to the salad and that adds to the calorie total as well. There are a lot of other options we can put on the salad if you want to add new flavors to it.
2. Salad Dressing
This is by far the fastest way to making your salad unhealthy. Most salad dressings we choose are high in unhealthy fats, high in calories, and contain extra sodium. Stick to extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar to keep the calories healthier and less overall calories consumed.
Yes, this innocent topping adds a lot of extra useless calories along with zero nutritional value. Many croutons also contain high fructose corn syrup and that is a no-no as well.
Now these are just 3 things you should avoid the next time you choose a salad on the menu at your favorite restaurant. There are plenty more to go along with this such as processed meats, the tortilla strips you see on southwest salads, nuts, etc. The best thing you can do is carefully look at what ingredients are in the salad and determine if that is the healthiest option for you.
